Climate
Change -- Spin Files (left

1. The Bush
Administration chose to litigate to
prevent the EPA from
implementing CO2 emissions controls. April 2,
2007 The Supreme Court “rebuked the Bush administration” .. “for
refusing to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, siding with
environmentalists in the court's first examination of the
phenomenon of global warming.” Science,
Environmental Defense, Washington Post
2. Jim
Hansen, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies suffered
censorship of his reports by Bush political operatives. New
York Times, Columbia U website (includes full text of testimony
before the Congress)
3. The
Bush appointee head of NASA just recently observed
he didn’t think warming was much of a concern. MSNBC.
4. Severe
budget cuts by Bush are causing the loss of
data accumlation. Satellite and labs will not be funded. One
major satellite now functioning beyond projected lifetime
will be allowed to die. Georgia's own world famous
Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (doing work vital with
a changing environment) has lost DOE funding and likely will
die. Boston Globe,
Reuters, MSNBC,, Science, Athens Banner Herald.
5. The
AAAS provides many examples and editorially
expresses grave concerns as to a dangerous politicization
of studies and reports. Editor Donald Kennedy in Science,
30 March 2001 reported over 30 peer reviewed studies related
to global climate change in the preceding year. This elicited
an immediate response by a Bush operative attempting to raise
doubts.
6. The
prestigious Union of Concerned Scientists publishes
statements of protest of Bush misuse of science, widely available
in mainstream media. CNN, UCS
website
7. Corporate
giant EXXON is recruiting people who will create doubt about
warming. The right wing American Enterprise Institute
is offering thousands of dollars in grants to anyone willing
to do the same. The Guardian, Washington Post
9. Web
of Deceit The trail of intentional
obfuscation and ignorance is rich and tangled. The
more carefully one tries to follow this critical science
the more clear the pattern is, and the more alarming. The
following are a number of articles and references I have
run onto and managed to preserve. Planet, Testimony
to Congress, GAP
Letters to
the Ed sparking the formation of this archive.
Two
late additions, both excellent summations of activities
to delay addressing and developing remedies to the consequences
of the planet warming.

ANGLER
- THE CHENEY VICE PRESIDENCY
"Dick Cheney is the most influential
and powerful man ever to hold the office of vice president. This
series examines Cheney's largely hidden and little-understood
role in crafting policies for the War on Terror, the economy
and the environment."
Wednesday: Part 4
Environmental
Policy
Dick Cheney steered some of the Bush administration's most important
environmental decisions -- easing air pollution controls, opening
public parks to snowmobiles and diverting river water from threatened
salmon
