SACRED INDIAN SONG

Oomph! Auggh! Oomph! Auggh!
Oh it was 'long 'bout 'leben o'clock
When the moon went down the block
Caught myself on the mountain top
Hide my face from God.
Oomph! Auggh! Oomph! Auggh!
Walk and talk with Jesus
Oh halle--hallelujah
Oomph! Auggh! Oomph Auggh!
Glory in my soul.

Lustily we sang, following the lead of one of my
many red-haired, blue-eyed cousins as she stood
unabashed in front of us in her ragged dress and
brown cotton stocking that made her shapely legs
look lumpy.

"Stop! Stop, Mary Prescott. You have ruined our
morning devotional. I do not believe that is truly
and Indian song your daddy taught you. I think
your daddy just made it up. Mrs. Watkins was real
cross with our third grade class all morning>

"Oomph! Augh!!" On the playground, Arthur,
asked me "Don't you think that was a good song
Cousin Mary was singing? I think it's a darn good
Indian song. What does Mrs. Watkins know?
Uncle Walter didn't make it up. My daddy says it
was our Cherokee great grandfather who taught it
to him."
