In the US the notion of a special holiday to celebrate mothers came as an aspect of the peace movements, as did most of the various women’s movements. Julia Ward Howe was a well known poet, writer and cultural figure of the day. It was in 1870 that she published the widely read Mothers Day Proclamation that proved to be among the early seeds from which the holiday grew Written shortly after the ending of the Civil War, its aim toward ending war is explicit.
In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. In the US. Among experiences of motherhood and marriage are the responsibility for the totally dependent, the vulnerable, to nourish into autonomous adulthood and as well manage family,softening, if not repairing,conflicts and the injuries of failure and defeat. All endow knowledge and skills that women bring when we tread into public political arenas.
Recently in a television interview Hillary Clinton referenced the power of determined women joined together in a cause with an account of the women of Liberia who demonstrated and protested until the recent civil war in in that nation ended and a woman elected president.
